The building opened in 1969 as a Hindu temple – the first in the Midlands. It was previously St George’s Presbyterian Church, designed by JP Osborne and built for £5,000 in 1896. The name Shree Gita Bhawan is in honour of one of the sacred texts in Hinduism, the Bhagavad Gita, the word Shree means Holy and Bhawan is another name for temple, so it can be translated as The Holy Gita Temple. The external designs of the stupas and entrance was done in 2009, the beautiful carved wooden doors were made in India specially for this Mandir. Recently the community have raised funds for a large extension at the rear of a community hall and kitchen. Hundreds of people attend for festivals and daily prayers. The head priest is Acharaya Dharm Dutt Vashist who has been priest here for over 20 years. Arun Sinha has been part of the community for 5 years and is Secretary of the Board of Trustees.
