Every summer the Abrahamic Foundation runs a youth camp, watch a video of one of the highlights.
The Abrahamic Foundation
The Abrahamic Foundation bought the main building 2013 with funds raised from the local community, prior to their ownership it had been the used by MIND for adults with special needs and it was originally the Central Board School built in 1855. They hold the five daily prayers like all mosques, but they have a big focus on being a community hub for which caters for Muslims and is open to all people. They have recently purchased the former community centre next door which now houses their madrassa and extensive youth programmes. During the week they run a number of activities including: exercise classes for elderly men and women, women only class, youth clubs, counselling, a food bank and advice and guidance from Imams on issues like marriage, family breakdowns, parenting, drug abuse etc. Organising Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimages to Mecca) is a significant part of life at the Abrahamic Foundation. It is significant that they have an Imam with connections there who can organise visits. Groups go on Umrah about three times a year and they organise Hajj trips most years. Interfaith work is really important to the Abrahamic Foundation through involvement with Faithful Friends and Women First and hosting community Iftar melas during Ramadan.
Shabnam says that Islam is threaded through her whole life and gives her focus and guidance. She started wearing the hijab (headscarf) after a pilgrimage to Mecca when she was 13. It wasn’t forced on her, she wanted to wear it to bring her closer to her faith. She says that is it now an integral part of her and gives her confidence when she wears it, she has had people react negatively, after 9/11 and 7/7. Nothing harsh but comments called out in the street.
